Hi.
We seem to have gone off the subject of Scott Purple onto the crimson cylinder barrel lacquer....
The tank finish purple is actually darker than many attempts to match it in recent years, and I've seen everything from a hideous lilac shade thru' to almost black.
The nearest readily available colour is FORD DARK AUBERGINE, and it is available from any car paint suppliers. If anyone wants to check out the colour when applied to a large area, (much better than looking at "chips"!), then you can get an aerosol from Halfords for £5-99. I've just checked on their website and about four out five branches have it in stock. I would emphasise that it is only an acrylic paint, so possibly not petrol proof, and therefore unsuitable for tanks. Of course it might be OK, and could easily be checked out on a test panel before applying to a tank.
Hope this helps.

Hello again.
Since my previous posting I've seen some Ford Dark Aubergine paint en-masse (on an RS2000 ! ) and must admit that it does look very dark, sort of ripe Victoria Plum colour. I have also noted that Halfords do a petrol proof clear lacquer for £5-49 a can, which could be used to protect an acrylic colour.
Regards,
Brian |

Brian Dees (Deespray) is a well known restorer and painter of motorcycle tanks. He mainly does Vincent tanks, but has painted a couple of 1936 Scott tanks for me with Scott purple panels and gold leaf pinstripes as per the book. We did quite a lot of investigation on beforehand, and the result was extremely good and as far as I can see quite correct. Brian should be able to give you the necessary data. I think it would be a good idea to contact him. He is a gentleman and an enthusiast.

I got my purple paint from Geoff Green (the Club's Badge and Regalia Secretary), he supplies it with spraying or brushing thinners as required. He may even have some with him at Abbotsholme this weekend ?
Cheers,
